Fabio Buitrago is a Nicaraguan marine ecologist, conservationist. Trained in Ecology and Natural Resources at the Central American University (UCA), he worked early on as a research assistant studying native fish species, later expanding his focus to crocodile populations in Río San Juan—research that earned him a DAAD scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Wildlife Management and Conservation in Costa Rica. Over his career, Buitrago has led major biodiversity studies, conservation initiatives, and environmental education efforts, contributing to the protection of key marine and coastal areas. He has produced several nature science books, an environmental education TV show, more than 20 scientific publications, a portable marine Museum (Nicaragua Azul). Currently based in Roatán, Honduras, he continues to contribute to coral reef restoration, while pursuing a Fulbright-funded PhD in Marine Ecology at Boston University focused on Caribbean reef's ecology, which is threatened by over fishing and climate change.
