Nathalie Ferrand
(editor)Nathalie Ferrand is a research director at the CNRS and, since 2024, has headed the Institute for Modern Texts and Manuscripts (ITEM), the research center where genetic criticism was invented in the late 1960s. She is particularly responsible for the “Écritures des Lumières” team. A specialist in 18th-century literature, she teaches at the École normale supérieure in Paris (ENS/PSL). She is the author of numerous books and articles (www.nferrand.info) on the novel, literary illustration, marginalia, and the application of genetic criticism to texts from the Ancien Régime. She discovered several Rousseau's manuscripts. She contributed to the Oxford edition of Voltaire's Complete Works and published two books in the Oxford University Studies on the Enlightenment series in 2009 and 2011. Her recent publications include: Écrire en Europe de Leibniz à Foscolo (ed. Paris, CNRS-Éditions, 2019), an edition of Rousseau's short stories entitled Trois contes (Rivages, 2021) and, in 2022, a monograph Dans l’atelier de J.-J. Rousseau (Hermann, 2022), in a collection she created for Hermann publishers (https://www.item.ens.fr/atelier/). She is currently preparing an edition of selected letters by Rousseau for Gallimard, as well as a book paying tribute to the founder of genetic criticism: Ma génétique. Pour Louis Hay à l'occasion de son centenaire (co-edited with P. Musitelli, Paris, Garnier Classiques).

(editor)Paola Italia teaches Italian Philology and Scholarly Editing at the University of Bologna, having taught at the Universities of Siena, Rome La Sapienza, Wellesley College (USA) and at ITEM (CNRS Paris). She has published more than 200, among scholarly editions, essays and articles on various nineteenth- and twentieth-century authors and topics, with a particular focus on philological and linguistic issues related to editions of paper and digital texts (Editing Novecento, Salerno, 2013; Editing Duemila, Salerno, 2020) and on the study and edition of authorial variants (Che cos'è la filologia d'autore, written with Giulia Raboni, Carocci, 202414, translated into English: What is authorial philology? OBP, Cambridge, 2021, https://doi.org/10.11647/OBP.0224), including Manzoni and Leopardi. In the twentieth-century field, she has worked on Savinio, Bassani and Gadda (Come lavorava Gadda, Carocci, 2017, French translation, Dans l'Atélier de Gadda, Paris, 2023). With Giorgio Pinotti and Claudio Vela she co-directs the new Adelphi edition of Gadda's works. With Simone Albonico and Giulia Raboni she co-directs the Carocci series Filologia d'autore. In Digital Humanities her domains of competence are in the field of Textual Theory, Text modelling and encoding, Variants Mining, Authorial Knowledge Sites (Wiki Gadda, Wiki Leopardi, Leopardi Ecdosys, Manzonionline). She founded and directs the site www.filologiadautore.it (more than 1.200.000 hits since 2010), and collaborates with DHARC, where she coordinates, with Francesca Tomasi and Fabio Vitali, Manzoni’s The Betrothed 1827 and 1840 double digital edition (Philoeditor) and, with Dario Brancato, of Benedetto Varchi’s History of Florence (VASTO). She is currently developing new models for Scholarly Digital Editions and Multilingual Digital Editions (Leggo Manzoni) and Data Visualization (Gaddamap).
