14. Landscapes of Investigation with Seniors

Chapter of: Landscapes of Investigation: Contributions to Critical Mathematics Education (pp. 223–246)

The authors discuss how seniors engage in mathematical activities when inserted into landscapes of investigation. Through a qualitative approach, the researchers collected data in two meetings with a group of seniors who were involved in landscapes of investigation in a mathematics education project aimed at that age range. The authors also highlight that the activities fostered interaction/collaboration between the seniors, causing them to change their conception of mathematics, producing knowledge and raising philosophical, aesthetic, technological and mathematical discussions.

Guilherme Henrique Gomes da Silva has a research interest in mathematics education for social justice. In 2016, he concluded his PhD study addressing the role of mathematics education in the face of affirmative action policies in higher education. In 2017, his work received an award from the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior—Brasil (CAPES), Ministry of Education in Brazil. Currently, he is concerned with understanding how mathematics education could contribute to the academic progress of affirmative action students from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs in Brazilian higher education. Since 2012, he has been Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at the Universidade Federal de Alfenas.

Rejane Siqueira Julio is Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at Universidade Federal de Alfenas, Brazil, since 2009. In 2007, she obtained a Master's degree in mathematics education at Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp), Campus Rio Claro, São Paulo. In 2015, she completed her PhD study in education at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). Her research interests relate to teacher education and professional development from the perspective of the model of semantic fields and the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She is interested in approximations between these perspectives and critical mathematics education.

Rafaela Nascimento da Silva

Rafaela Nascimento da Silva has a degree in mathematics from Universidade Federal de Alfenas, Brazil. Her research interests include teaching and learning processes, mathematics education, and the education of seniors. She works as a high school teacher in mathematics.
