Competitive Authoritarianism in Media Reforms

Chapter of: Arab Media Systems(pp. 303–322)
The chapter provides an account of why the media structure in Morocco is an uneven playing field with the State having the advantage. It argues that observable configurations of power over media are mainly tied to a repressive media culture and heritage that can be fairly described as a competitive authoritarian regime. Argumentation is grounded in an analysis of history and the political economy of media.
