The problems cover many concepts such as divisibility, induction, calculus, binomial, T/F statements, polynomials and so on Ė all good questions for a senior pupil looking to do some kind of mathematics at university [...] This is a book which staff and pupils will enjoy and will allow pupils who are serious about their mathematical studies a chance to be challenged and excel.

óMr N.G. Macleod, Lomond School, Mathematics in School.

This new and expanded edition is intended to help candidates prepare for entrance examinations in mathematics and scientific subjects, including STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper). STEP is an examination used by Cambridge Colleges for conditional offers in mathematics. They are also used by some other UK universities and many mathematics departments recommend that their applicants practice on the past papers even if they do not take the examination.

Advanced Problems in Mathematics bridges the gap between school and university mathematics, and prepares students for an undergraduate mathematics course. The questions analysed in this book are all based on past STEP questions and each question is followed by a comment and a full solution. The comments direct the readerís attention to key points and put the question in its true mathematical context. The solutions point students to the methodology required to address advanced mathematical problems critically and independently.

This book is a must read for any student wishing to apply to scientific subjects at university level and for anyone interested in advanced mathematics.

The DfE (Department for Education) has generously contributed towards the publication of this volume.

Stephen Siklos was a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge. He worked in Cambridge Universityís Faculty of Mathematics, where his main area of research was Einsteinís theory of general relativity and where he acted as Admissions Officer. He had a particular interest in the transition from school to university mathematics and for over thirty years presided over the STEP examinations, used as a qualification for undergraduate admissions by some of the top UK university mathematics departments.
