6. Lakes and wetlands
Lakes are places where surface water is detained, and they have open water surfaces. Wetlands are often found around lake margins, but they differ from lakes in that they also contain vegetation. This chapter covers where lakes are found and the processes that affect their water levels. The features used to identify wetlands and the variety of wetland types are also presented. Sections on sustainability introduce examples of how human water use has caused lakes to decline or disappear and strategies for restoring wetlands.

(author)Stephanie Kampf is a Professor of Watershed Science at Colorado State University, USA. She has degrees in Geosciences (BA) from Williams College; Hydrogeology (MS) from University of Nevada, Reno, and Civil and Environmental Engineering (PhD) from the University of Washington. She teaches classes in hydrology and watershed problem analysis and has published over 80 scientific journal articles on climate, hydrology, geomorphology, and fire. Her current research examines snowmelt runoff, headwater streams, and how wildfires have affected streamflow and erosion in mountain watersheds. Select publications:
