19. The Cartography of Global Catastrophic Governance

Chapter of: An Anthology of Global Risk(pp. 531–586)
Providing an overview of the existing governance arrangement for Global Catastrophic Risk (GCR) hazards and drivers, this chapter finds that the framework’s effectiveness is doubtful. The authors explore gaps in different areas of global governance, finding that despite there being regulation and action dedicated to managing GCRs, in areas such as AI and asteroid impacts, policy needs improving. Laying out steps in which to improve the state of GRC governance, such as building the foresight and oversight capacities of the UN for GCRs, this chapter provides recommendations that contribute towards a more sustainable future.
