Chapter of: Chance Encounters: A Bioethics for a Damaged Planet (pp. 175–180)
In this chapter, I use ideas from Iris Marion Young, Charles Mills and Mich Ciurria to argue for a non-ideal theory approach to bioethics. I argue that instead of using naïve utopianism or dystopianism in thought experiments, bioethicists should start from the messiness and injustices of the world.
