Chapter 2

Phonology

The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of phonological data collected by the author. Here, the reader can start to comprehend Reinhardt’s faults in transcription and analysis, and to observe the first few signs of diachronic linguistic variation occurring in the area. Features such as the behaviour and stress of vowels seem at times to relate this vernacular to the dialects of North Africa, and at other times to neighbouring varieties in the Arabian Peninsula.
