Chapter of: The Diaries of Anthony Hewitson, Provincial Journalist, Volume 2: 1891–1912

Hewitson is semi-retired (having sold the Preston Chronicle in 1890); he moves from Bilsborrow to Forton, a small village south of Lancaster. The diaries detail his family and domestic life, buying and selling horses and cattle, church attendance, his reading and church attendance, preparations for a Lancaster Liberal-Unionist newspaper (the Lancaster Standard, launched in 1893), and many conversations with mill owners, shopkeepers, local councillors, landowners and characters.

Dr Andrew Hobbs used the diaries of Anthony Hewitson in his 2018 monograph, A Fleet Street in Every Town: The provincial press in England, 1855-1900 (Open Book, 2018), which won the 2019 Research Society for Victorian Periodicals book prize. He is a retired journalism lecturer and former newspaper journalist, and has written extensively on how local and regional newspapers and magazines of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries expressed a sense of place.
