9. St Ives, Hunts

  • David Yeandle (author)

This chapter examines Hunt’s very significant curacy (8) in St Ives (1865–66), where he nearly succeeded in becoming vicar, following the incumbent’s death, but was thwarted when the patrons appointed a ‘high ritualist’. There is a wealth of detail given by Hunt about the ensuing clash of churchmanship, resulting once more in his dismissal. The last section looks at his final curacies at St Mary’s, Lambeth (9) (1866–76) and St Nicholas’s, Sutton, Surrey (10) (1876–78).
