13 pages9. Epilogue: Why Etnos (Still) Matters
- Nathaniel Knight (author)
Chapter of: Life Histories of Etnos Theory in Russia and Beyond(pp. 389–402)
Etnos, a concept which transcends more conventional boundaries of society and markers of identity, is marked by its vitality. Knight underlines its significance across communities as a bringer of social meaning, and of connectedness. Though not to be regarded as monolithic, etnos denotes a totality of distinctive elements, be that language, material culture or religious beliefs, to name a few. Through this, etnos enables an overarching, collective identity across its peoples, and offers a compelling way of understanding the social world.
