1. The End of the Before Times

Chapter 1 introduces the purpose of this book as (1) to document K-12 classroom teachers’ experiences of emergency remote teaching and learning (ERTL) during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) to find, in the negative space of ERTL, the elements of a good-quality education; the approach to achieving this purpose is described. As the sub-Saharan philosophy of Ubuntu underpins the study, a comprehensive description of it is provided. The sequential mixed methods used for data collection are also described in detail, including the design of surveys and interviews and approach to analysis of the data collected. The chapter ends with summaries of subsequent chapters.
