7. Post-Relocation Socio-Economic Study of an Occupational Community in Egypt

Assessing the Social Effects of Relocating the Fishermen Community of El-Mex, Alexandria

Chapter Seven analyses the case of a fishermen village undergoing relocation as part of an urban renewal project. Asmaa Abdelhalim assesses the social effects of relocating the fishing community of El-Mex in Alexandria. The results of her post-relocation socio-economic study reveal that the relocated inhabitants suffer from high levels of grief, and some have since abandoned their fishing activities. However, she notes that relocation was not the sole cause of these socio-economic changes, identifying other factors such as the design of the new housing and dock and the change in economic status.
