Chapter of: City of Capital and Labour: The Making and Transformation of Industrial Manchester (pp. 15–34)
This chapter focuses upon the eighteenth century residential developments beyond the medieval core and the establishment of Manchester’s two principal civic buildings the Exchange and the Infirmary. It also considers the commercial innovations that laid the ground for the later economic take-off of the town, especially in terms of the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in in 1761.
