Database and Website Developer

About us

Open Book Publishers is an innovative, not-for-profit Open Access academic publisher based in Cambridge, actively changing the nature of the traditional academic book. We are widely recognised as world leaders in Open Access scholarly monograph publishing, and proud to have published over 85 titles - including works by renowned authors such as Noam Chomsky and Amartya Sen. All our books are available online free of charge, so that everyone can access high quality peer-reviewed research, regardless of income. So far, our titles have been read by over one million people from more than 180 countries.

About the role

We are looking for a database and website developer who is enthusiastic about open source and Open Access initiatives, to join our small energetic team. Having developed our own internal database and statistics aggregation systems we are now looking to upgrade and release these as open source products, to facilitate uptake and lower the barriers to entry for new Open Access publishing initiatives.
In addition to providing day-to-day support of our systems, the successful applicant will be responsible for two interrelated development activities:
  1. Open Book Publishers is participating in a EU funded Horizon 2020 project (http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/206340_en.html) to develop and implement open source software and a database for ourselves and five partner publishers to enable the aggregation of online readership and download data for individual publications across a range of independent online hosting platforms.
  2. In parallel with this, OBP is looking to update and further develop our own database, website, and internal title management processes to accommodate new and innovative digital publishing practices, and to then release these as open source content.
The role will be varied and broad ranging, including: the development of usage, sales and title management databases; improving integration with our payment, promotion and distribution channels; advancing our digital repository; and optimising the discovery and accessibility of our content (SEO, mobile access).
We are looking for somebody passionate about contributing to the open source and Open Access communities, with solid skills in Java, Python and SQL, and comfortable with database management and the configuration and installation of open source platforms and tools.
This is a full-time position, partly funded by the EU grant, for two years in the first instance and based in Cambridge, UK. The position will be available to start from 1 February 2017, but as this is an important appointment for us we are prepared to wait until the right person becomes available. Gross annual salary will be in the range GBP £25,000-£30,000 (depending on experience).
If you are interested in joining us and engaging directly in the development of a vibrant open academic publishing ecosystem then please contact, or send a CV and covering letter, to Rupert Gatti (jobs@openbookpublishers.com, tel 01223 339929), ideally by 24 January but later applications will be accepted until an appointment is made.
For more information about OBP, our mission and vision, or this position, please do look around the website or contact Rupert directly.

Internships

Our internships involve a range of tasks ranging from marketing, to editorial and text formatting. As we are a very small operation our interns have a chance to experience all areas of publishing in a non-corporate environment. We are a non-profit initiative to provide books to all and our titles are accessed in 207 countries by an average of 400 readers per title each month. Unfortunately we are unable to remunerate our interns, or refund any travel expense.
