Our Vision
Open Book Publishers is a Social Enterprise (CIC) company founded by a group of scholars concerned about the increasing price and difficulty to publish and access research in the humanities.
- Our titles are rigorously peer reviewed by independent scholars and professionally proof-read and copy-edited
- Our titles are openly accessible in digital version
- Our titles are also available as high quality printed editions at affordable prices
- Our authors retain the full copyright of their work
- Our titles are marketed and distributed worldwide
Independent Review Process
To ensure publication of high quality research Open Book Publishers maintain an independent Advisory Panel and Editorial Board, made up of distinguished academics. OBP takes the refereeing process very seriously. All book proposals are impartially assessed by a number of experts in the given fields. OBP does not charge authors for publication.
We also minimise the typically long publishing time of academic books by speeding up the assessment and printing process of manuscripts. In the longer run we believe that scholarly societies and universities are best suited to ensure the scholarly quality of published works. To that end we foster publishing collaborations with academic societies and academic institutions willing to develop their own monograph series and welcome enquiries from any such organisation.
Dissemination
To maximise the dissemination of our publications OBP makes digital versions of all publications freely available to read on the web through a number of channels including the emerging book search platforms such as Google Book Search.
Google Book Search has only been in operation for a few years, but in that time it has revolutionised research practices and scope within the humanities. Not only do these platforms provide scholars with a vast range of monographs, but they also provide powerful search engines with which to locate relevant passages within the books themselves.
Readers are able to purchase the printable digital version of either the whole volume or separate chapters in order to meet the demands for prompt availability of research and readers' specific interests. Digital editions are formatted to optimise their discovery by scholars using online search engines.
Printed editions
Despite the digital 'revolution', demand for the traditional printed versions of research monographs is still high. Advances in print-on-demand technology are such that very small print runs are now economically viable. We use this technology to provide high quality paperback and hardback editions of each monograph at affordable prices. Combined with our non-profit ethos our paperback editions are priced at around £10 (less than the cost of an inter-library loan), and hardback editions at around £25.
