6. Concluding Thoughts on Language Shift and Linguistic Diversity in the Himalaya: The Case of Nepal

In this chapter, the author concludes that language shift across the Himalaya is complex, uneven and highly specific – it depends on both historical processes and local conditions. The studies contained in the volume are summarized, and the author observes the necessity for Nepal to come to terms with its own multilingualism and find ways to recognize creative innovation – even when this is not sanctioned by the state.
